当智宣子去世后，智襄子接任政务，与韩康子、魏桓子在蓝台举行宴会。宴席上，智襄子戏弄韩康子，并侮辱了他的宰相段规。
智国听闻此事后劝告道：“主公如果不防备其他国家的报复，那么报复一定会来临！”智襄子回答说：“局面将由我来决定。
如果我不给他们制造麻烦，谁还敢挑事儿呢！” 智国又说：“不是这样的。《夏书》上说：‘一个人犯了三次错误，怨恨不会公然表现出来，应该在未显露之前防备。’君子能够勤勉地处理小事，因此不会有大的困扰。现在主公只是一次宴会就羞辱了别国的君主和宰相，而且没有做好防备，还说‘他们不敢挑事儿’，这样的态度难道不是错的吗？蚊虫、蚂蚁、蜜蜂、蝎子，都能够伤害人，更何况其他国家的君主和宰相呢！”
然而，智襄子没有听取劝告。
After the death of Zhixuanzi, Zhixiangzi took over the governance and held a banquet at Lantai with Hankangzi and Weihuanzi.
During the banquet, Zhixiangzi mocked Hankangzi and insulted his chancellor, Duan Gui.
When Zhiguo heard about this, he advised, “My lord, if you don’t guard against retaliation from other countries, it will surely come!”
Zhixiangzi replied, “The situation will be determined by me. If I don’t create trouble for them, who would dare to provoke?”
Zhiguo responded, “It’s not like that. The Book of Xia says, ‘When a person makes three mistakes, resentment will not manifest openly, so it should be guarded against before it becomes evident.’ A noble person diligently handles minor matters, thus avoiding major troubles. Now, my lord, you have insulted the sovereign and chancellor of another country at just one banquet, without taking precautions, and saying ‘they dare not provoke.’ Isn’t this attitude wrong? Mosquitoes, ants, bees, and scorpions can harm people, let alone the sovereigns and chancellors of other countries!”
However, Zhixiangzi did not accept the advice.
智襄子向韩康子要土地，但韩康子不想给他。
段规说：“智襄子贪利而又固执，如果不给他，他就会进攻我们，不如给他。他追求得到土地，必然会向其他人提出要求；如果其他人不给，他一定会武力威胁，然后我们可以避免危险并等待形势的变化。”
韩康子说：“好。”
他派使者把一块有万户的领土送给智襄子。
智襄子很高兴。
之后，他又向魏桓子要土地，但魏桓子不想给他。
魏桓子的部下任章说：“为什么不给呢？”
魏桓子说：“无缘无故索取土地，所以不给。”
任章说：“无缘无故索取土地，诸大夫必然会害怕；我给了他土地，智襄子必然会骄傲。他骄傲而轻敌，而我们假装亲近他，智氏家族的命运必然不会长久。《周书》上说：‘想要使他失败，先纵容他。想要夺取他的利益，先姑且给他一些好处。’主公不如先给他，让这个智襄子骄傲，然后我们可以结交盟友并对付智氏家族，为什么单独把我们作为智宣子的攻击目标呢！”
桓子说：“好。”
于是也给了他一块万户的土地。
Zhixiangzi asked Hankangzi for land, but Hankangzi didn’t want to give it to him.
Duan Gui said, “Zhixiangzi is greedy for profit and stubborn. If we don’t give it to him, he will attack us. It’s better to give it to him. He seeks to obtain land and will surely make demands of others. If others refuse, he will resort to military threats. Then we can avoid danger and wait for the situation to change.”
Hankangzi said, “Good.”
He sent messengers to grant Zhixiangzi a territory with ten thousand households.
Zhixiangzi was delighted.
Later, he asked Weihuanzi for land, but Weihuanzi didn’t want to give it to him.
Weihuanzi’s subordinate, Ren Zhang, said, “Why not give it to him?”
Weihuanzi said, “He seeks land without any reason, so I won’t give it to him.”
Ren Zhang said, “If he seeks land without reason, other nobles will surely be afraid. If I give him the land, Zhixiangzi will become arrogant. He will be arrogant and underestimate his enemies, while we pretend to be close to him. The fate of the Zhixiangzi will not last long. The Book of Zhou says, ‘If you want him to fail, first indulge him. If you want to take his benefits, first give him some favors.’ It’s better for you to give it to him, make Zhixiangzi arrogant, and then we can establish alliances and deal with Zhixiangzi. Why single us out as targets of attack by Zhixuanzi?”
Weihuanzi said, “Good.”
So he also granted him a territory with ten thousand households.
智襄子又向赵襄子要蔡和皋狼的地方，赵襄子不给。
智襄子生气了，率领韩国和魏国的士兵攻打赵襄子。
赵襄子打算逃跑，问属下，“逃到哪里比较好？”
随从说，“长子城近，城墙坚固。”
赵襄子说，“百姓好不容易修完城墙，现在又要他们为我守城，能和我同心吗？”
随从又说，“邯郸城粮食充足，可以去那里。”
赵襄子说，“搜刮百姓口粮才让粮仓充实，现在又要他们打仗拼命，谁能和我同心？还是去晋阳吧，那是先帝的领土，地方官尹铎待百姓宽厚，人们一定能和我站在一起。”
Zhixiangzi asked Zhaoxiangzi for the territories of Cai and Gaolang, but Zhaoxiangzi refused to give them.
This angered Zhixiangzi, who led soldiers from the states of Han and Wei to attack Zhaoxiangzi.
Faced with the situation, Zhaoxiangzi planned to escape and asked his subordinates, “Where would be a good place to flee to?”
One of his attendants replied, “Changzi City is nearby, and its city walls are strong.”
Zhaoxiangzi said, “The people have worked hard to build those city walls. If I ask them to defend the city for me, will they truly stand united with me?”
The attendant suggested, “Handan City has abundant food supplies. We could go there.”
Zhaoxiangzi responded, “We have only filled the granaries by extorting food from the people. Now, asking them to fight and sacrifice themselves, who will stand united with me? Let’s go to Jinyang instead. It was the territory of the late emperor, and the local governor Yin Duo treats the people generously. I believe the people will stand with me there.”
智襄子、韩康子、魏桓子率领军队围住晋阳，计划引水淹城。最后只剩一块名叫三版的地方没有淹没。
大水淹没了灶台，青蛙开始繁衍，但是人民没有背叛赵襄子。
智襄子视察水势，魏桓子给他驾车，韩康子在身边护卫。
智襄子说，“我今天才知道大水也能毁灭一个国家。”
魏桓子用胳膊肘碰了碰韩康子，韩康子踩了踩魏桓子的脚，他们心里明白，河流汾水可以淹没魏国首都安邑，绛水也可以淹没韩国都城平阳。
属下疵对智襄子说，“韩康子和魏桓子肯定会造反。”
智襄子问，“你怎么知道？”
疵回复，“按常理推断，我们带领韩国、魏国的军队攻打赵国，赵国灭亡了，一定会危及到韩国、魏国。现在我们约定瓜分赵国，赵国都快被打败了，但是韩康子和魏桓子脸上都没有喜色。这不就要背叛你吗？”
第二天，智襄子把疵的话告诉了韩康子和魏桓子，韩康子和魏桓子对智襄子说，“这个人是为了赵国游说，让你怀疑我们，放慢攻击赵国的速度。如果他说的是真的，我们已经拿到了大量已经侵占的赵国土地，为何还要追随你打赵国？”
两人出去后，疵进来了，他问道，“为什么把我的话告诉了他们？”
智襄子反问，“你怎么知道我告诉了。”
疵答道，“我发现他们见了我匆忙离去，他们必定是知道我推测出了他们的意图。”
疵请求出使齐国。
Zhixiangzi, Hankangzi, and Weihuanzi led their armies to surround Jinyang, planning to flood the city by diverting water. In the end, only an area called Sanban remained unaffected by the flooding.
The floodwaters submerged the hearths, and the frogs began to multiply, but the people did not betray Zhaoxiangzi. Zhixiangzi inspected the water level, with Weihuanzi driving his carriage and Hankangzi standing guard beside him. Zhixiangzi remarked, “Today, I realize that a great flood can also destroy a country.”
Weihuanzi nudged Hankangzi with his elbow, and Hankangzi stepped on Weihuanzi’s foot. They understood each other’s thoughts. The Fen River could flood capital of Wei, Anyi, and the Jiang River could flood capital of Han, Pingyang.
An attendant named Ci said to Zhaoxiangzi, “Hankangzi and Weihuanzi will surely rebel.”
Zhaoxiangzi asked, “How do you know?”
Ci replied, “Based on logical reasoning, we led the armies of Han and Wei to attack Zhao, and now that Zhao is on the verge of defeat, it will certainly threaten Han and Wei. We have agreed to divide the spoils of Zhao. However, both Hankangzi and Weihuanzi show no signs of joy. Isn’t this a betrayal of you?”
The next day, Zhaoxiangzi told Hankangzi and Weihuanzi about Ci’s words. They said to Zhaoxiangzi, “This person is lobbying for Zhao, trying to make you doubt us and slow down the attack on Zhao. If what he says is true, we have already seized a considerable amount of Zhao’s territory that we have occupied. Why should we continue to follow you in attacking Zhao?”
After the two left, Ci entered and asked, “Why did you tell them about my words?”
Zhaoxiangzi retorted, “How do you know that I told them?”
Ci replied, “I noticed that they hurriedly left after seeing me. They must have known that I had deduced their intentions.”
Ci requested to be sent as an envoy to the state of Qi.
赵襄子派张孟谈秘密出城接待韩康子、魏桓子，张孟谈说，“嘴唇没了，牙齿就会受冷。现在智襄子率领军队进攻赵国，赵国灭亡了，下一步就是韩国、魏国受难了。”
两人答复道，“我们也知道这个发展趋势，来进一步商讨。”
商量计划之后，张孟谈送两人返回。
赵襄子派人杀掉智襄子军队守卫水提的士兵，让大水冲进智襄子军营。
智襄子忙着处理大水，韩康子、魏桓子带领军队左右夹击，赵襄子带士兵勇敢冲锋，将智襄子杀死，击败了敌军。
Zhaoxiangzi sent Zhang Mengtan secretly out of the city to receive Hankangzi and Weihuanzi. Zhang Mengtan said, “When the lips are gone, the teeth will feel the cold. Now that Zhixiangzi is leading his army to attack Zhao, once Zhao is destroyed, it will be the turn of Hanguo and Weiguo to suffer.”
The two replied, “We are also aware of this development trend. Let’s discuss further.”
After discussing the plan, Zhang Mengtan escorted the two back.
Zhaoxiangzi ordered his men to kill the soldiers guarding the water gate in Zhixiangzi’s army and let the flood rush into Zhixiangzi’s camp.
Zhixiangzi was busy dealing with the flood while Hankangzi and Weihuanzi led their armies to flank from both sides. Zhaoxiangzi bravely led his soldiers to charge, killed Zhixiangzi, and defeated the enemy army.
